The lion and the scales. Scales and coin weights of Venice, edited by Giulio Gianelli, Guido Zavattoni and with the collaboration of Lia Apparuti of the Campogalliano Scale Museum, Italian Academy of Numismatic Studies, Vicenza 2003, pp. 198, numerous col. illustrations, 21 cm, br. and.

Series of numismatic studies of the Academy, 12.

Catalog of the exhibition held in Vicenza from 17 to 19 October 2003.

Opened by a study by Giulio Gianelli on the various aspects of the circulation of declining coins concerning English, Genoese and Milanese coinage in the modern age, to underline the universality of the problems posed by this circulating currency, the volume illustrates 145 monetary weights for Venetian coins, from the end of the 15th century to the first half of the 19th, refined selection of Guido Zavattoni's largest and most international collection. From the introduction with the Roman-Byzantine and Arab-produced weights we move on to the weights for the coins of Venice: the gold ducat, the Tron lyre, the Marcellus and the Moceniga, the gold shield and the double, the ducat of silver, the shield of the cross, the Justina Major and Minor, the reduced gold ducat, the new 24 sous ducat, the Napoleonic and Austrian coins. For each coin and its weight, Zavattoni draws up a historical-economic sheet full of news and curiosities, with the description of each weight, indicating the technical characteristics, the shape, the source of production, the era. Each specimen is reproduced in full size and color as well as several coin boxes. The volume ends with a chapter dedicated to books, tariffs and notices.
