The reprint of the volume "Numismatics, Collectors and Collections, of coins and medals, in Italy", published in 1925, once again pays full recognition to Memmo Cagiati for his unconditional commitment to numismatics, one year after the 150th anniversary of his birth. With the work, Cagiati wanted to catalog the public and private collections present in Italy - providing precise and secure information about their placement, their scientific orientation, their singularities and their consistency - and to register the numismatics scholars and the authors of publications, in order to propose useful references to researchers, scholars, the simplest collectors and more generally for a better knowledge of the subject. The result was a volume that today offers a clear and precious snapshot of the varied scenario of numismatic research and collecting in the early decades of the twentieth century, highlighting its diffusion by geographical area and its bursting recovery after the First World War. Thus we discover, for example, that in Bari there were three important private numismatic collections and others there were in Corato and Molfetta, obviously with a particular interest aimed at the coins of Magna Graecia and the medieval and modern ones of Southern Italy. A similar situation can be found in the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto, and then in Lucera, Manfredonia, Sansevero and Troia in the province of Foggia. Long is the list of Neapolitan scholars, including the author of the work himself who, after having dedicated a lifetime to the study of the coins that had beaten the Lombards, Normans, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese in the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, "now collects well-preserved Greek coins ". Leafing through the volume it is noted that in Rome and throughout central Italy the coins of the Roman pontiffs were studied, almost with the same diffusion with which the pontifical medals were collected. In Milan and Turin, the series of coins of the House of Savoy were those to which good attention was paid, without forgetting the issues of the many minor mints; among the medals the Napoleonic medals and those of the Italian Risorgimento aroused greater interest. Everywhere Roman coins were appreciated, mainly from the imperial period, while trials and projects of Savoy coins were analyzed in Milan, medieval and modern commercial cards, tokens and seals were collected in Florence, the particular Punic series were explored in Sicily and Sardinia and the Etruscan types in Tuscany. In Rome of the famous numismatic collection of Vittorio Emanuele III, the scientific basis of the "Corpus Nummorum Italicorum", whose compilation the most expert numismatists in Italy collaborated with, the consistency of 80,000 pieces is reported. Coinage from Salerno has always fascinated numismatists: its long history that includes Lombard, Norman and Swabian issues makes it particularly interesting. If one abstracts from the simple propositions of Salerno coins present in the numismatic works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the first systematic work on these issues, published at the end of the nineteenth century, is due to the Benedictine father Gaetano Foresio. However, Foresio's classifications do not appear convincing and the scholars contemporary to the author already realized this. In the following years, unpublished coins were identified, which are described by Arthur Sambon in a work published in Paris in 1919. However, Sambon does not examine the coins of the Salerno mint in an organic way, but proposes a classification of the alleged Lombard issues including, next to a few types in gold, silver deniers dated to the 9th century and copper types dated between the 10th and 11th centuries. Memmo Cagiati (1869-1926) in 1925 considerably widened the field of investigation in the work "The monetary types of the Salerno mint", examining Lombard, Norman and Swabian coins, confirming and deepening what Sambon proposed. The volume by Cagiati was printed in Caserta in the Enrico Marino Royal Plant of Graphic Arts in a small number of copies: only a few scholars had the opportunity to get hold of it and it soon became a bibliographic rarity. There are several characteristics that make the work important and original, including the author's Preface - where a careful and detailed history of the studies involving these coins is proposed - and the drawings, which present ideal specimens, the evident result of meticulous observation. of many pieces, a circumstance that greatly facilitates the scientific study of the extraordinary Salerno coins. Francesco della Martora (1809-1884) was a concrete protagonist of the economic, moral and civil development of the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, however his figure until now has been known only to a small circle of local scholars. Economist with an eclectic culture, with his multifaceted activity he played an important role in supporting, progressing and expanding the industry, agriculture and commerce of Capitanata and the surrounding areas, to the point that his ideas and his work were universally recognized. and appreciated. The analysis of the figure of Francesco della Martora and his activity is entrusted in this volume to two works. The first work, "A Foggia economist of the nineteenth century. Francesco della Martora", by Dr. A. Taronna, was prepared as a thesis for the Faculty of Law of the R. University of Bari, for the academic year 1931-32 . Unpublished to date and consisting of six chapters, the text is the result of careful investigation and presents the life, pragmatic nature and work of the economist of Capitanata with efficacy and compositional agility. The dissemination of this document after almost 90 years from its creation allows it to be rescued from oblivion, enriching with a piece the mosaic of the biographies published by the illustrious men of the kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in an area in which, today as at the time of the drafting of the work, is particularly lacking. This bibliographic insufficiency reveals the difficulties encountered by the author in his investigations and allows us to better appreciate the fruit of his labors. In the sparse bibliography available on the subject there is the "Funeral praise of the knight Francesco della Martora" made by E. Barone, the second work included in this volume. Printed for the first time in Foggia in 1884, for the types of the S. Pollice typolithographic establishment, it is anastatically re-proposed in this text to complete Dr. Taronna's paper. After 100 years from its realization, the unpublished work of Arthur Sambon "On the coins of the southern provinces of Italy from the XII to the XV century" is published. The volume examines in detail the coins indicated in the title: it opens with the analysis of the coins of Roger II (1130) and ends for the continental section with the coins of Duke Giovanni d'Angiò struck in the name of his father Renato, who claimed the throne of Naples (1459-1464), and for the part that refers to Sicily with the issues in the name of Ferdinand I the Catholic (1412-1416).
